Warm Fuzzies

Whilst happily pruning this weekend I came across some little orange fuzzies nestling on an errant rose seedling which is destined for the chop. They are as soft to touch as they look. I have no idea what they are and what they might contain if anything but thought that they looked rather sweet. Would be delighted if anybody could shed light on the mystery.

  1. Dragging this from a dusty shelf at the back of my mind, but I think they're called Robin's Pincushions, A gall caused by a particular species of wasps that lays its eggs in rose hips.

  3. Hi Anna,

I agree; they're Robin's pincushions and although I've never seen one before in real life I have seen photos on forums occasionally.

Very crazy looking things, aren't they?!

  6. Many thanks Blue Shed Thinking for providing me with the answer so quickly - the shelf is definitely not dusty :) Such an appropriate name. Have been able now to do a little reading about them. Thanks everyone else for your comments.
