French Leave

Slowly coming back down to earth here after a holiday in France. Our ageing camper van behaved itself impeccably taking us down to the Limousin region, where we stayed in the cottage you can see above. Morever aforesaid camper van got us back to Caen without any mishaps. We made our way down slowly along country roads, via small towns and villages so had a few nights on either side sleeping in the van.

The weather was brilliant though too hot to do anything that required much in the way of energy. Some magical moments to look back on including star studded night skies and falling asleep to the sound of chirping crickets and croaking frogs. My nocturnal star gazing was somewhat curtailed though when we found out that there were wild boar in the vicinity. I did not stray so far from the cottage then but contented myself with sticking my head out of the bedroom window to gaze upwards into the darkness.

We eat well and drank too much. Did a fair bit of reading - more on that in another post and visited a garden festival - again more on that subject to follow.

Thanks to the wonders of satellite television we were able to view and celebrate Andy Murray's Wimbledon win. A few days later we were also able to celebrate La FĂȘte Nationale (Bastille Day), when a flurry of balloons floated over our campsite on the balmiest evening you could possibly imagine.

In our absence the garden and allotment have frazzled but why oh why have the weeds still carried on growing?

  1. Well, now I've got the answers to my questions already! Lovely cottage, if you ever come down our way, pop in and have a tea or something cool on my garden bench. Take it easy! Looking forward to the post on the garden festival :)

    1. Thanks for your visit and comment Dee. France is a beautiful country to visit - hope that you get there again before long. The balloons were a magical touch to round up the day.

  5. I know what you mean about the weeds - I surfaced at the end of ripping out our kitchen in preparation for the new one to be fitted only to find that I had to fill an entire green bin and three trugs to uncover the little shrubs in one border in my back garden!

Your holiday sounds really lovely, glad the camper behaved itself for you, I think you had the right idea avoiding the boar though, best experienced on the plate rather than when out star gazing...

    1. You think that the heat might knock their growth to touch Janet but it does not work like that :( The van was most obliging which was a relief. It has misbehaved once or twice in France before which has really tested my French vocabulary to the limit.

  6. Sounds a lovely relaxing holiday, hope the allotment survived, that is the worst of weeds, so frustrating!

    1. It was indeed most relaxing Annie and the allotment hung on in there thanks to my lovely plot neighbour. Sadly she was just doing watering and not weeding as well :)

  8. Sounds like a perfect holiday. Looking forward to the other posts. I've only been to France once, a brief stop in Paris but I'd love to go back and travel all over. It's always a bit of a shock coming home to a garden and plot after a holiday to see how everything has faired. ;)

  9. Hope that you get the chance to return to France at some point WW. My very first visit was to Paris too as a fifteen year old. It was April and the city was so beautiful. Funnily enough I've not returned to Paris although we have been lucky enough to see quite a bit of the country. Yes coming home is a bit of a shock to say the least :)
