A January Muse

"The Snow-drop, Winter's timid child ,
Awakes to life, bedew'd with tears.
And flings round its fragrance mild,
And to where no rival flow'rets bloom,
Among the bare and chilling gloom,
A beauteous gem appears".

~ an extract from 'The Snowdrop' by Mary Robinson, 1758 -1800.

The illustration is 'The Snowdrop Fairy' by Cicely Mary Barker, 1895 - 1973.

    1. Thanks for your comment Angie which made me chuckle. I'd like to think that she has some snowshoes to slip into later.

  2. Love this! I had my first snowdrops come up last year (in April!) and was completely enchanted. I planted lots more this fall and can't wait to see their cute little blooms.

  3. Beautiful. I must have told you a dozen times now, nearly every time you post a photo of a flower fairy, I've been meaning to treat myself to a flower fairy book for years and I still haven't. I'm going to put it on my wish list right now so that I stop forgetting.

  5. I always loved TheFlower Fairies as a child. And the verse is right some snowdrops have a wonderful fragrance. In my garden the most highly scented are S.Arnott and Brenda Troyle which smells of honey.

  6. I don't think fairies feel the cold and same applies to me when I'm out shooting a beautiful garden or plants. There's something very touching about these delicate creatures, the snowdrops. PS: Anything that can be done so that I don't have to write every comment twice, Anna? Best wishes, Annette

  7. Bet she's passed by your place. I wonder if they'll be early this year as so far the cold has stayed away.
