Garden Bloggers Bloom Day - June 2014

Today will offer very limited photo opportunities as we are committed to family celebrations, on what we hope will turn out to be a sunny day for a beautiful June bride, so the camera came out yesterday. A whizz round before an allotment session and then another on my return. The day started on the damp side after unexpected rain the evening before but it turned into a sometimes bright and warm day, when there were plenty of bees and butterflies about.

The flowers probably do not need much in the way of a formal introduction but just in case :

Top row from left to right - alchemilla mollis, astrantia 'Gill Richardson' which performs better than any other of my red astrantias and salvia nemerosa 'Caradonna'.
Middle row from left to right - the first darkly delicious flowers of clematis 'Petit Faucon' - the colour fades with age, linaria purpurea and leycesteria formosa.
Bottom row from left to right - astrantia variety unknown, rosa glauca - the foliage of which is probably more attractive than the flower and a geranium pratense graced by a visitor.

There are a myriad of June flowers to linger over at May Dreams Gardens, with thanks to Carol as always for hosting. What a great opportunity to share our June blooms and grow our wish lists!

  4. Hope the wedding was wonderful - how 'close family' was it, I wonder? That astrantia is very pretty - I think I definitely need to get a few more (particularly some that aren't white) as they all seem to be such good 'do-ers'

    1. It was a most relaxing and enjoyable day thanks Cathy. The bride was one of our nieces. Yes astrantias certainly merit the description of a good doer. Do treat yourself to more :)

    1. Have just about recovered Angie - the lack of sleep took a greater toll than the amount of alcohol consumed :)

  6. A lovely selection of June flowers - I bought the very same Astrantia the other day after seeing it at Coughton Court I am hoping it will spread itself about - does it self-seed or will I have to split it eventually?

    1. I've only had Gill for a couple of years Elaine and have not noticed any seedlings yet. I may have been good about deadheading it last year but can't remember whether this was the case. The plant I bought though was rather large and I already have a small division now growing elsewhere in the garden.

    1. Thanks for visiting Rose and for your comment. It gives me great pleasure to see bees in the garden. The big day started cloudy but the sun eventually broke through which was good as the ceremony was held outdoors.

    1. It's a rather attractive colour Annette but most definitely changes as the flowers mature. When it opened for the first time ever I though that I had got the wrong plant :)

  16. I have astrantia Snow Star that looks very similar to your photo, wonder if that could be it?

    1. Thanks very much for your comment and suggestion. I don't think it is 'Snow Star' as I've no recollection of ever buying a plant of that name but like 'Snow Star' it is an astrantia major of some description :)

  17. Oh my, lovely. I think I am particularly smitten with that gorgeous, dark clematis. What a stunner.

Am I completely hallucinating, or is that a wiry pig, top right, behind the salvia? Must be dreaming...! lol

    1. No definitely a pig but not the flying variety :)
