    I can' t imagine. The front is a bit too open for owls isn' t it? Maybe bats?

    Thanks for the comments and suggestions - Elaine, yours made me smile! Owls and bats are both in the area. I will have to hope that next time we pass we might bump into a local resident who can shed light on the mystery.
