In A Vase On Monday ~ "Sunshine On A Rainy Day"

It looked as if there might not be a vase on a Monday today as it poured down most of the morning, whilst an essential shopping trip reared its ugly head in the afternoon. There was just time though earlier this evening before cooking our evening meal to snip my very first ever chrysanthemum. I've never grown them before - I'm not sure why, but they are hopefully going to provide some welcome autumn colour. I bought a set of plug plants from Sarah Raven earlier in the year, which contained two plants of five varieties. This is 'Orange Allouise' which is certainly providing a ray of warmth and sunshine today. There are doubts in my mind as to whether all the plants are going to flower as there are still no signs of flower buds on some but I've been telling myself that they've got perhaps until November to party. I'm off to make a welcome brew now, before sitting down to some vase gazing and gawping, thanks as always to our lovely hostess Cathy over at 'Rambling in The Garden'.

  2. The ugly head of a shopping trip...definitely sounds nasty!

I was so pleased to see your 'Orange Allouise' today as I ordered some of the same plugs after you talked about them before (it was the green froggy one that attracted me, I recall!). I have never grown chrysanths before either and interestingly I only have buds on one, this one, too! So that sounds about normal if ours are both at the same stage - well, except my buds are still tiny so have a long way to go before they get to this lovely stage. Thanks for sharing, Anna

    1. Yes Cathy it was 'Froggy' that appealed to me too most along with 'Anastasia Green' but so far I don't think that there are any signs of buds on these :( One of the 'Porto Purples' is looking promising though.

  5. That's an exceptionally pretty Chrysanthemum, Anna. I hope all your plants come through for you as well as this one has. While Chrysanthemums are sold in the garden centers here in the fall, they don't perform well at all in the garden in our climate so I'm limited to admiring them in blog posts.

    1. Oh your good wishes for the remainder are appreciated Kris. I imagine it must be too hot for them to flourish in your neck of the woods but then you have other goodies that we could never contemplate growing :)

  6. I can see that you are going to be posting some fabulous vases from your Chrysanthemums in the coming months. The first bloom of the season is always a very special one, like your first kiss of the day perhaps? The shade and colour are quite special.

    1. I'm not quite so sure about that Noelle but I live in hope. I think that its first flower was more exciting than that first kiss of the day but I'm usually still half asleep then. I just hope that himself doesn't read this :)

    1. Yes I believe that they are edible like dahlias Sue but wonder if any there any varieties that are specially recommended for nibbling. I must do some research :)

  8. What a lovely colour. I've never grown chrysanthemums for cutting but Mick's uncle does and I always get a few vases full from him at this time of year, they really brighten the house up.

  9. I love the green glass of your vase as it is perfect with the orange mum. I miss having mums. Mine didn't do so well here. I'll have to see if there are any for a future vase.

    1. A cheap and cheerful vase Donna - one of a set of four which are all different colours. It was just the right colour and size for one flower.

  10. A very pretty drop of sunshine - just what we need here today as it is pouring here now! I have never had luck growing Chrysanths. I hope yours all get to bloom this year!

    1. Oh the winds must have been blowing across the North Sea then Cathy. I would like them all to bloom this year but have serious doubts.

  11. Gorgeous. I really enjoyed the chrysanths I grew last year, though they didn't produce many flowers between them. I grew the same collections. Pity I managed to kill them off over winter when I was distracted...

    1. Oh that's interesting to read that you grew the same collection Janet. I'm not too confident about whether I will manage to get them through the winter - must find the instructions :)

  12. I love both dahlias and chrysanths although I've never grown either. Your link to the Sarah Raven's website has got me thinking though - temptation beckons! She recommends bringing them into a greenhouse to overwinter so that they can be cut down and reshoot in the spring. I don't have a greenhouse but maybe a solution could be found ….

  13. What a lovely chrsanthemum! I love the colour and the petals - they look a bit untidy like a bad hair day! I haven't grown chrsanthemums this year because I have trouble with slugs and as we have a puppy I am loathe to put down slug pellets. 14. On what a lovely bit of sunshine. I hope you get lots more blooms. Why don' t you take a few cuttings to overwinter just in case?
