Almost Wordless Wednesday ~ A Worisit?

This shrub stopped me in my tracks on Saturday morning when strolling along admiring the fabulous plantings on the promenade at Grange-over-Sands, Cumbria. It was singing out on a most dull and wet morning. My photograph taken from underneath a ginormous black umbrella doesn't do it justice. Would love to know what it is.

  1. Dear Anna
I think it might be a type of Berberis - they have thorns and berries and the leaves are the right type. Possibly Berberis wilsoniae? Good luck with finding out!
    Best wishes

    1. Oh many thanks for your suggestion Ellie :) I will investigate forthwith. The area where it is planted is tended weekly by volunteers so if I ever come across them I might be able to ask whether they know what it is.

  2. It's a greeny thing with red berries. I bet the birds will love it come winter.

    1. I know it is Elaine but I want one just like it so a name would help :) I'm sure that it will be a real bird magnet but hope that they resist long enough for me to return on a dry day to take another photo.

  3. I have no idea what this is, Anna, but I agree with Elaine, the birds must love this in the winter. If you are on Facebook, there is a Facebook page called Plant Identification where contributors from all over the world post pictures they want to be identified. I'm always amazed that there is always someone who can identify it precisely. Loved your vase on your last post of flowers foraged on your walk!

    1. Thanks for the suggestion Rose. I will see if I can take a clearer photo before long and if so will submit it to the group.

    1. Thanks for your comment and suggestion Ann. I see that you are in Cumbria and wonder if you've strolled along the prom at Grange-over-Sands admiring the borders. Do go if you haven't already :)

  5. I think it's a Pyracantha (look at the leaves), don't know how true the colours are from the pic as everything looks a bit washed out but they stop me in my tracks around here these days too ;)

    1. The jury is still out Annette so pyracantha it could well be :) It certainly wasn't the best of photos but I hope to get a better one next time I'm up there.

  6. Zooming in on the photo I can see thorns, I would guess Pyracantha. They look good this time of year, evil to work with.

  7. Hello I am a bit behind hand with my comment Anna. This is definitely a berberis. I agree with Ellie that it is probably Berberis wilsonii. Another stunning berberis is Berberis georgii. It has bright red berries.
