In A Vase On Monday - Fall

The title of today's 'In A Vase On Monday' post, is not only a nod to the arrival of a new season but also a reference to the fact that I recently had a rather nasty fall. A holiday in France and Italy had to be cut short when I took a tumble downhill on our way out for lunch and a glass of vino. Unlike Jack and Jill in the nursery rhyme I couldn't be mended with "vinegar and brown paper". Would it were that simple. I am sitting here not only looking slightly like a panda but my right (dominant) hand is now encased in plaster as I have a broken metacarpal. The long to do gardening list is on hold. I did have a go at sowing some annual seeds on Saturday and discovered that it is not easy to do using the wrong hand. I ended up with a mountain of seeds in the middle of one tray. On the plus side though I'm not in any great pain and the various cuts and bruises are now healing. I have also recently discovered the most useful dictation feature on my iPad which is making one aspect of life easier.

It was a bit of a challenge to snip and plonk a few flowers for vase but I got there and felt a sense of achievement when I did. Himself kindly took the photo for me. Just a couple of varieties in the mix :

  • Rudbeckia hirta 'Sahara' - grown from seed sown back in February. This is the second year that I have grown these and the plants have been so much sturdier and productive than last year. Maybe the drought conditions that we experienced last summer didn't suit them. A definite candidate for next year's seed list.
  • Dahlia - possibly 'Henriette' and only just into flower but most pretty.

With thanks as always to our lovely hostess Cathy over at 'Rambling In The Garden' for all her gentle encouragement to get out there and snip.

  1. Oh Anna, I am so sorry to hear you had to cut your holiday short too - what a disappointment all round. It has been noted the fall came before the glass of vino, of course! I am glad you are not in much pain but the inconvenience must drive you scatty at times - how long will the cast be on? The dictation facility sounds a real asset, unlessyou have to painstakingly edit it afterwards! Your vase is so gently pretty - I made a note of R Sahara last year but didn't end up buying any seeds and need to rectify this. Take care Anna, and mind your feet!

  2. Oh, you poor thing Anna! I do hope everything heals well and quickly too. The gardening season is at least winding down and many jobs can wait till winter. Your vase is very pretty - especially that Rudbeckia. I had no idea until recently just how many different Rudbeckias there are! Take care and get welll soon!

  4. I'm sorry that your trip came to such an abrupt and painful end, Anna. I've heard that doing things with your non-dominant hand can boost the creation of new synapses in the brain, which is a good thing (even if it's a proverbial pain in the neck). As to your vase, it offers a beautiful combination of colors. I've been on the look out for Rudbeckia 'Sahara' here but have yet to find it.

  6. I feel for you Anna, and thoughts came into my head that all of the previous comments have made. So sorry that you were injured in your fall. On another matter I understand that you mentioned how this year was less hot and dry than the previous. How different it has been here, we are quite a small country but its amazing how varied the weather can be. I am sure you will be catching up with your reading. To finish with, what a collaboration you have with 'himself' nice of you to post this as a 'joint' effort. Get well soon. x

  7. Sorry to hear of your fall and woes Anna. I know too well how that frustrates all gardening activities. Well done for keeping going, and blogging :)

  8. I'm sorry to read about your fall. Having been similarly incapacitated over the last few weeks (a nasty incident involving a berberis and a winch) I can quite understand your frustration at the lengthening to do list. It will all wait for you, you can be sure of that, heal yourself as a priority!
