A few snippets in today's 'In A Vase On Monday' gathered before the next lot of rain arrived on the horizon. An almost dry day was most most welcome though. Dry days have been in scant supply so far this autumn. In my vase some still shining late colour in the way of :
- Aster cordifolius 'Little Carlow' which is not only a beautiful colour, dainty, late to flower and also attractive to pollinators. I am aware that it has been renamed but as I am unable to pronounce or spell the new name I'm sticking with the old.
- Persicaria amplexicaulis- I think that this one is 'Blackfield' but it could be 'Firetail'. I must confess to not really liking the leaves but the flowers last for such a long time.
- A sprig of salvia 'Nachtvlinder' - not only does this flower over a considerable time but the foliage is deliciously scented. I started off with two sprigs but one came to grief as I was putting it in the vase.
- Finally some leafiness in the form of panicum elegans 'Frosted Explosion'. These were grown from seed sown in the greenhouse back in either March or April.
Thanks as always to our hostess Cathy over at 'Rambling In The Garden' for her kind invitation to share our vases on a Monday.
A sweet little vase and contents. I'm really keen on 'Frosted Explosion' and put it in everything. Good to still have colour.
ReplyDeleteThanks Alison. I'm not sure whether it self seeds but will definitely be growing 'Frosted Explosion' again next year 😄
DeleteIt sounds like you're already tired of the rain, Anna, but I can't help envying it, Anna. We could really use some here. I also envy you the Panicum, which I tried growing from seed for the first time this year. I've yet to see nary a sign of it but I wonder if those birds hanging out in my cutting garden recently could be responsible...
ReplyDeleteWe have had a lot of rain so far this autumn including some dramatic torrential downpours. Can't wait for a few dry days which you no doubt have to many of 😄 Those birds may indeed be the culprits!
Delete'Almost dry days are very welcome at the moment, but even those with fine misty rain are tolerable for some garden activities - too wet for bricklaying this afternoon though, sadly! Your little vase of late goodies is so pretty - and they are all long-lived performers. If the colour is accurate, I think the persicaria is probably Firetail as Blackfield is quite dark red. My Frosted Explosion didn't germinate this year, which is a shame, as it is a great addition to vases and borders
ReplyDeleteOh thanks for the persicaria tip off Cathy. Would have sent you some 'Frosted Explosion' plants if I had known 😄
DeleteYou did well to manage to cut blooms that were not dripping wet. The aster is pretty. We have Aster × frikartii 'Mönch' which also flowers over a ling period.
ReplyDeleteYes I was Sue. There was a gap in the rains which was just long enough for things to dry out before the next downpour. I had 'Monch' once upon a time and must replace it.
DeleteA lovely vase and to boot it all...not the muddy sort...love the setting with the sedum? and fallen leaves.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your comment Noelle and yes inded it is sedum 😄
DeleteA lovely little vase Anna. I love Persicaria, but have not been able to find the right spot for some in my new garden yet. The aster is really pretty. :)
ReplyDeleteOh thanks Cathy. I like perscarias too apart from the foliage. I hope that you can find somewhere suitable in your new garden to tuck one in to.
