IAVOM ~ 'Metal Guru'

Just dahlias in this week's 'In A Vase On Monday'. They are 'Copper Boy' which has been full of flowers since summer. There are still a good number in bud which I'm keeping my fingers crossed will win the race to flower before the first frosts. They have long stems, last well once cut but the one fault seems to be that the long stems flop rather drunkenly and snap off in heavy rain and wind. We have had a lot of inclement weather recently including last night and this morning so I cut these flowers yesterday before they came casualities. I made the mistake of bringing them into the kitchen to put into the vase only to then have to pursue three earwigs along the worktop. I will have to remember not to do that again! A change from the usual perch for Monday vases. I noticed that himself had left a terracotta pot which contained one of this year's tomato plants out to drain, after he considerately started to wash them out them out for me. I'm not sure why he stopped after one pot and will have to investigate.

The vase which has appeared here before is an Emma Bridgewater product and was purchased a few years ago via eBay.

Thanks as always to our steadfast hostess Cathy over at 'Rambling In The Garden' who has featured some lovely autumn joy in her vase this week.

  1. That's a very pretty dahlia, Anna. The stems of my dahlia plants seem to be toppling over quite a bit this year too - but I can't blame rain ;) I've yet to see any earwigs in my dahlia blooms but those disgusting creatures are such a perpetual problem with my artichokes that I've taken to carrying a bucket of soapy water with me whenever I go to cut one. It's better than having them run up my arm!

    1. Thanks Kris. I'm going to remember your idea of going out prepared with soapy water next time πŸ˜‚

  2. I have not seen that dahlia before, Anna - is it its first outing? It's very striking , and aptly named too. I have had a few broken stems here too, having been complacent earlier in the season when growth halted during the real heatwave - serves me right .πŸ˜‰

    1. I think that it featured in a vase a few weeks ago Cathy but the colour appeared slightly subdued as the light quality wasn't brilliant. Sorry to hear that your dahlia stems have been breaking off too.

  3. That is a very pleasing vase Anna! The dahlia is an eye-catcher, and the vase and terracotta 'stand' go well. We haven't had many earwigs this year but last year was terrible. They are always coming into the house, so we have got used to them… like spiders!

    1. I scream enough when spiders venture indoors Cathy unless they are small. Couldn't cope with earwigs too 😱

  4. Love the colour and tightly packed form of your 'Copper Boy', Anna. They look so beautiful on their own - nothing else needed. Gah - earwigs. They love my dahlias too. I go out at night with a torch when they are most active and squish them!

    1. Oh thank you for your kind words πŸ˜€ I am definitely not as brave as you. I couldn't squish an earwig 😱

  5. The precision of the arrangement of the petals is almost geometric as if computer generated. The terracotta pot is a perfect perch for the vase too, hope the other pots are now washed and stowed away.
