It's Monday again and time for a vase on what is a rather warm and sunny day. Fortunately though we had a good thunderstorm accompanied by a couple of hours or so of rain on Saturday - our first rainfall for about three weeks. There was much rejoicing followed by a mollusc hunt come darkness. As you can imagine there was a bit of a party going on. In my vase this week are :
- A flower from rosa 'Lady Emma Hamilton' who has just begun to open this last week. She is one of the roses that I can smell so is especially appreciated.
- A couple of the annual orlaya flowers which are hiding themselves at the back.
- Spikes of the restrained pink linaria 'Canon Went', which unlike it's purple relative doesn't seed everywhere with abandon.
- Some foliage from a physocarpus. I'm not sure which one.
- Astrantia major 'Gill Richardson' group which I think along with 'Burgundy Manor' are my favourite astrantias. The red ones always seem to take a while to get going but this one is now three years old and has now really taken off.
I'm so pleased to see that you're walking on sunshine, Anna, and who wouldn't with such a fine vase to cherish. So important to stop and smell the roses ☺️. Happy June!
ReplyDeleteThank you Annette and wishing you a most happy June too 🌹
DeleteYou have some choice elements there in your arrangement Anna. Lucky you to have this rain, as I type this, the thunder is rolling, but the sun is shining, so somewhere on the Mendips there is a promise of rain, and hope this time the garden won't be missed out.
ReplyDeleteOh I do hope that the wet stuff reached your garden this time Noelle!
DeleteWoh-oh... 🎵 Lovely contents in your vase, Anna - astrantia is one of my very favourite flowers and I will no doubt keep adding more. Not sure if I have Burgundy Manor - isn't it ovely when they begin making a nice big clump? I moved and divided one of my white astrantia whose name has just gone out of my head, and it has rewarded me this year with better flowering 😊 Lady Em is a always a little later to strat flowering here - is yours?
ReplyDeleteAstrantias are one of my favourite flowers too Cathy although I think that I may have to be more ruthless about self seeders. I would offer you a bit of my 'Burgundy Manor' but for the fact that it grows in a border plagued by marestail which I would hate to pass on to anybody. I think that Lady Em is perhaps the last of my roses to come into flower. She has only just opened and I think that's all of them accounted for now.
DeleteOh, that rose! You've created a lovely vignette with the vase Anna. Astrantia is something I admire but have no luck with.
ReplyDeleteOh thanks for your kind words Suzie 😀
DeleteLovely collection. Seeing your Lady Emma Hamilton makes me think she's the one I should have ordered in place of the Roald Dahl I bought. If he doesn't do better soon he's going to be replaced!
ReplyDeleteThank you Magpie Sue 😀 I've not seen 'Roald Dahl' in the flesh but it looks most attractive in the catalogue. Sadly David Austin has now withdrawn 'Lady Emma Hamilton' from their sales list 😢 I'm not sure why as she is a beauty.
DeleteI love astrantias and the colour of the rose is lovely
ReplyDeleteThanks for your visit and comment Sue. I hope that you're managing to keep up with the watering at the allotment during this hot spell.
DeleteA lovely arrangement, Anna! I adore Astrantia but it refuses to grow in my area. (I've tried twice.) Your 'Lady Emma Hamilton' has me convinced that David Austin Roses sent me the wrong rose bush years ago - my plant has offered me 2 flowers this year but their color is far deeper and much smaller than yours appears to be :(
ReplyDeleteOh what a shame Kris! Maybe down to different growing conditions. I would be quite miffed if a rose just produced only two flowers. Did you ever take it up with David Austin? Sadly they no longer sell the rose.
DeleteThat rose is so beautiful. I adore the color especially mixed with the Astrantia.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your visit and comment Donna 😀
DeleteLady Emma Hamilton is one of my favourite David Austen roses but when I tried to order it for my new garden I found it was unavailable. It is such a rich colour and I love the red stems too. Such pretty astrantias too.
ReplyDeleteI know Chloris - I wanted a second last year only to be thwarted. They sold a very limited stock of them which all went in a flash. I may have one coming this autumn though. The foliage is quite beautiful in it's early stages. I am going to try to take a cutting or two later in the year.
DeleteSorry, that was Chloris, I don't know why I've become anonymous.
ReplyDeleteI think that is just down to the vagaries of Blogger Chloris!
DeleteHi Anna. Love the Astrantia! It looks so pretty next to that physocarpus foliage and the peachy rose. Hope your cold goes quickly and you can do some gardening again soon.
