In A Vase On Monday ~ Shades Of Autumn

Picked yesterday in short break after a most soggy saturating Saturday and in anticipation of today's forecast rainclouds are :
  • Rudbeckia 'Sahara' - a half-hardy perennial which is now a must have on my seed growing list each spring. It produces a veritable lucky dip of colours and either single or double flowers. Invariably there are some colours that I like more than others and these flowers are my favourites this year.
  • Some spikes of forgotten identity persicaria - it's quite a tall one and flowers for a good long spell.
  • Dahlia - 'Copper Boy' - not fully open yet and I wonder if they will still oblige off the plant and in water.
  • A single shy picking from our next door neighbour's fuschia. I think that it may be the from the hardy variety 'Mrs Popple'. Whatever it is it has produced a splash of colour in late summer/early autumn for many years, which we are also able to enjoy as it's part of a boundary hedge.
The vase is a new - one from a trio of grooved bud vases purchased only last week when I enjoyed an appetising lunch and a garden walkabout in the company of an old and dear friend. We visited Abbeywood Gardens in Delamere, Cheshire where we found it hard to believe that we didn't come across another soul in the gardens apart from one of the gardeners! It was a breezy day with a slight chill in the air but dry at the time of our visit. Apparently though it had been very busy in the morning so we were just obviously lucky with our timing. On the way out we popped in into the gift shop where I couldn't resist temptation.

Thanks to Cathy over at 'Rambling In The Garden' for hosting and inviting us to share our Monday vases each week. I'm looking forward to seeing what's in other blogger's vases today and will certainly have pen and paper to hand as I do.

  1. Persicarias are proving popular in vases this week!! Yours work so well with Sahara and that pretty dahlia - and your new vase of course! Was each one in the trio a different shape?

  2. That Dahlia 'Copper Boy' is a delight, and what a pretty ridged vase. I can understand how you were tempted. Have a lovely week.

    1. It's a most satisfactory garden to visit Donna - not too big so ideal for a gentle stroll.

  4. A pretty and seasonal arrangement in your new vase, Anna. I would have been tempted too!
What a beautiful garden scene. I’d be happy to find a bench in there and do nothing but sit and stare. Lovely photo!

    1. Thanks Catherine. There are a few garden benches dotted about so we did have a sit down and a stare at one point during the proceedings 😀

  5. That's a warm and appealing bouquet, Anna. 'Copper Boy' is an attractive dahlia, and one I haven't seen available on my side of the pond. I love the photo from Abbeywood and can imagine I'd enjoy a visit there as well.

    1. Oh if only we were all nearer Kris! I'm sure that there would be a lot of garden visiting going on. 'Copper Boy' is a most attractive dahlia indeed bar the floppy stems. I think that it is also known by another name which I can't remember at the moment. Will have to do some research as it might be available on your side of the pond.

  6. ohh, I love the Sahara Rudbeckia, haven't seen that one. The garden looks like a wonderful afternoon respite for vase shopping. Are the trees Willowleaf Pears?

    1. It's Amelia asking about the pears.

    2. The rudbeckias are quite lovely Amelia whatever their colour or form although perhaps they are not ideal for people with a strict colour scheme in mind. I think that those beautiful trees are indeed willow leaved pears but will have a closer look next time I'm there to check.

  7. Sahara is lovely, and I will definitely try growing some one year. Your little vase is. ery pretty, and just right for a few pickings from the garden, especially as we go into that time of year where there is not much to pick. Lucky you, having that garden to yourselves. Nothing like a garden visit with a good friend, is there!

    1. Oh good luck with rudbeckia 'Sahara' Cathy. I'm sure that you would like them and they should fare well in your drier summers. It's an absolute pleasure garden visiting with a friend who is more than happy to talk plants all afternoon. We were even thinking where we might visit next year as we walked around 😂

  8. It's always great to avoid the crowds. The vase of flowers are very autumnal. You sent me some of the persicara and it is thrving but I can't remember the name either.

    1. Yes it's good to be somewhere when it's a bit quieter Sue and so handy for taking photos too! Are you sure it was me who sent you the persicaria as I've no recollection of ever dividing the plant 🤔 😂

    2. I thought that I was sure - it was a few years ago. I can’t think of who else it could be.

  9. Sahara is very pretty! Making a note, since I was just thinking that I'd like some other colors of rudbeckia next year to go with my very yellow ones.

    1. 'Sahara' is most attractive Angela although the mix does usually contain some yellows too 😂
