It's good to be back with Cathy and other blogging friends today with a vase on Monday. It's been a few weeks since I last participated. It was a very wet day yesterday, misty and dripping this afternoon but the sky turned blue and the sun made an appearance this afternoon. In my vase this week are ;
- Sweet peas - still hanging on but probably for not much longer. They were sown in the middle of March and planted out at the back end of April. The foliage is now mildewed but the flowers and scent are still coming.
- A couple of sprigs of the dainty flowering perennial aster 'Little Carlow'.
- Some astrantia 'Gill Richardson' which featured in a vase at the start of July. These are from a second flush of flowers and one of my two plants is producing more flowering stems than first time around.
I remembered that this particular vase was loitering on the Welsh dresser when we recently spent a few days in our caravan in Cumbria. Whilst there we visited a craft fair that is held at regular intervals throughout the year and came across the potter that makes these vases. They are most useful as they come with holes all the way round to insert your flowers and foliage in. Here it is when I last used it in IAVOM back in 2016 :

Here the forecast is set for a few fair and warm for the time of year days so I'm looking forward to getting out into the garden as much as I can. My Wordpress marathon is nearly complete so I'm really looking forward having to a bit more spare time and hopefully some reasonable autumn weather to catch up on a lot of jobs. Top priority being to complete my late as usual spring bulb order.
Oh and you still have sweet peas too, like Karen... It's so lovely to see them in Septemvber and I am going to try harder and have them myself next year (if I remember to do a second sowing that is...). What is your annual rainfall in Runcorn? It always seems to be raining when you post. Mind you, rainfall in Rochdale where I was as a teenager is nearly twice as much as here, so you may not be very different. Anyway, no-one woud be guess it was late summer or early autumn when they saw your bright and breezy vase, as it looks every inch a summer vase through and through. It's good to have astrantia reflowering, isn't it? I am pleased to know that you have nearly finished getting to grips with Wordpress and wonder what technical wizardry you are now able to do... 😉
ReplyDeleteThat vase from 2016 had me dreaming of spring. And the latest one is heavenly. I love that the sweet peas are hanging on. Mine came back with a brief cold snap but the heat has returned and they are gone again.
ReplyDeleteSweet peas, Astrantia and asters - oh my! That's a combination I couldn't even imagine here. In Southern California, some people recommend sowing sweet pea seeds in September (right after our Labor Day holiday, the unofficial end of summer) so seeing them in bloom now is extraordinary. Realistically, I won't sow my own seeds until sometime in November but that's because the cutting garden won't be cleared of "summer" flowers until then ;) We live in very different climates!
ReplyDeleteThe vase sounds wonderful and I like the material. I am not so good with frogs in vases, they always tilt, built in holes are a great idea. The summery colors and fragrance celebrate the end of summer. I can only dream of sweet peas and astrantia in my garden, we have asters here. Amelia
