IAVOM ~ Fleeting

A quick pick and plonk from me in this week's 'In A Vase On Monday'. I don't anticipate that the contents will last any great length of time in water but they were most appealing when picked. In my vase are :

  • Stems of amelanchier lamarkii - if only the bronze juvenile foliage and flowers lasted longer! They are so quick to come and go.
  •  A couple of snippets of what I think is some sort of euphorbia which appeared in the garden all by itself.
Thanks as always to Cathy over at 'Rambling In The Garden' for encouraging us to share our vases at the start of the week.

Well here March seems to be confused as it is going out like a veritable lion. The last few days have seen the first and probably now only frost of the month whilst another day was intermittently peppered with intense hailstorms. We've also experienced extremely windy weather which has taken the edge off the temperatures. Whilst the garden has been somewhat battered by the elements fortunately the greenhouse has remained snug and warm so seedlings are germinating and growing happily. We now have that extra hour of daylight in the evening to make use of outdoors which is most exciting. Yesterday afternoon though saw me and a good friend safely installed in seats at the Liverpool Empire Theatre, listening to a talk by gardening guru Monty Don on the subject of 'Great British Gardens'. He is a most articulate, knowledgeable speaker and is also quite humorous. A most enjoyable to spend a very wet and windy afternoon. Wishing you all a good gardening week.

  1. I have never thought to cut amelanchier for a vase and of course now is the time to do so. The dark euphorbia looks intriguing and makes a nice contrast - how odd that it has just appeared. No doubt the theatre was packed for Monty Don! I read an interesting interview with him in the Sunday Times Style magazine, talking about his wardrobe (everything seemed to be navy!)

    1. I imagine that the euphorbia probably came in with another plant Cathy or maybe with a visit from a bird. I don't really know much about euphorbias. Will have to investigate. Monty was wearing a linen suit, blue although a lighter shade than navy, a pale green scarf, red socks and brown shoes πŸ˜‚

  2. Wow what a delight to see Monty Don. I hear you about March in the garden. We usually have intense weather swings showing how resilient our plants really are. Love your sweet blooms no matter how long they last!

  3. I love Monty Don. I laughed at myself at how badly I misidentified the flowers (Sweet Autumn Clematis!!, not) I enjoy the mysterious appearances of things like your Euphorbia. They look wonderful together in your cream jar. It has been very windy here as well. I'm watering and watering...Ameli.a

    1. Thanks for your comment. Well the flowers do look clematis like Amelia so I can see how you reached that conclusion πŸ˜‚ Wind can dry plants out just as much as the heat although I sometimes forget that at this time of year and then have to plunge plants in pots into deep water to revive.

  4. Your cream jug is perfect for the blossoms with their goldeny red foliage. I also wish any of the spring blossom would last longer than it does… fortunately none has opened here yet, so hopefully it will wait until the weather improves!

  5. Thanks for your kind words Cathy πŸ˜€ I hope that your spring blossom makes a timely arrival and that you get ideal weather for keeping them in fine fettle for as long as possible.

  6. Amelanchier is one of my favourite shrubs, Anna, and the branch looks delightful in your vase. The weather has been the same here, so by the time the wind is finished with us there probably won't be many flowers left on it. Perfect weather to retreat into the greenhouse or go to a Monty Don talk. Fingers crossed for warmer days. Take care
