"The Distant Smell Of Summer"

"There is always in February some one day, at least, when one smells the yet distant, but surely coming, summer" - Gertrude Jekyll, 1843 - 1932.

After months of thinking about it, reading about it and dreaming about it today was finally a day for actually doing it - spending the best part of the day in the garden. The temperature hit the magical 60 degrees farenheit, seeds arrived in the post and seeds were sown. The green waste bin is almost full and I am now heading off to soak my limbs. I might pay for it tomorrow but today has been pure bliss! I was too busy to photograph it so the crocuses are 2011 vintage.

PS Great excitement also when after months of staring at it I finally can see small leaves emerging at the base of the African violet leaf I rooted in the autumn!

  1. It warmed up here today too. I headed outdoors but only for a mooch, I had too much to do indoors. Let's hope the better weather is here to stay for a while now.

  2. Hi Anna,

I always stretch after gardening and never have problems with pulled or aching muscles. You know the kind of stretches after/before exercise such as hamstring, calf etc.
Glad to see you managed to get out into the garden today! It was a glorious day for it, that's for certain. Just wish I hadn't missed out, although I did have Tuesday off and managed to potter around a little bit; just wasn't as warm.

And here I am hunkering down for what is supposed to be the first real snowstorm of the season! Bloody Hell!

  5. Sadly, here on the coast we had fog and drizzle all-day :(
But happy to hear you have had a good day 60oF - positively balmy!

  6. Glad you had fun out in your garden. I'm always so sore the first few times I get back out. I love the quote, we've had a couple of those days here this month. Then my 5 year old starts begging for me to fill up the wading pool :)

  8. Lovely weather here as well. I was at college - seed sowing and practicing whip and tongue grafting. In the sunshine, with no jacket on.

  9. Sounds like you had a great day. I'm paying for a week gardening with a bad back and sore elbow, think I might have tennis elbow!!

  10. It's been gloriously warm here too for the last couple of days. Hope you didn't pay for your endeavours - I filled my bin too last weekend, it's very satisfying isn't it?!

  11. The bitter cold has been replaced with sun, light frosts and T shirt afternoons over here. Today was one as Gertrude Jekyll described.

  12. It's wonderful to get out into the garden under the spring skies, so good for the soul after weeks cooped up indoors by wind and rain. Hurrah for the start of the gardening season. We have bags of green waste to be collected, and two full compost heaps.

  13. A sunny day at this time of year is bliss in the garden - especially when the Crocuses open fully. I am trying to get around my garden for the annual Spring tidy up but I do find it difficult to summon up enthusiasm when it is cold and grey outside.

  14. Yes! Right now we are enjoying good temperatures for gardening. My spring blooms are gorgeous, and I've been out this morning planting onions!
    Beautiful crocus!
    Happy gardening!
