The Memory Keeper

I've been scrabbling about in the back of kitchen cupboards today in search of jars. Not a case of efficient forward planning for marmalade making or potential jammy goodness or even the perfect pickle, but in search of just one suitable jar for a new project. I eventually came across a jar that has been decorated by either my mother or my sister - as well as the butterfly, a dragonfly and a bee are flying round its periphery. I'm not sure yet whether this jar will be big enough but I am hoping to use it to collect a year's worth of written reminders of what has made me feel happy - not necessarily big events but the little everyday happenings, that make you smile at the time. The idea comes from a friend who empties her jar out at the end of the year and reflects on all the positive things that have happened even in bleak years. I've already got one or two snippets to put in - a rainbow on New Year's Day, two robins feeding together at the bird feeding station again on the same day, as well as the fact that  yesterday afternoon I solved the identity of whodunit in Susan Hill's latest book 'A Question Of Identity', a hundred pages or so before the end! Time now to find some paper to jot these down before they slip away like dreams into the forgotten zone. How will you be recording 2013?

  4. What a brilliant idea, I may have to blatantly copy it, though I know I don't have any such pretty jars to keep my happy memories in. That's a happy thing in itself.

  5. That is a nice idea. If I go through a bleak period I need to remind myself of all the positive things in my life. I am inspired to create myself a little jar of hope : ) Thanks for sharing

  9. I love this idea! Not too complicated, but infinitely rewarding, both at the time of writing and at the end of the year. Wishing you many happy memories in 2013! :)

  10. Very clever - much easier than keeping journals or diaries. Do it on a day when nothing is going your way, it will soon make you feel a lot better!

  11. Hi Anna, You are so creative. I love it. The jar is pretty and the idea is genius. I really should do this too. Maybe I will. It's so easy to forget those little blessings when life gets so crowded with tasks.

  12. What a lovely idea. Our brains do tend to dwell on the negatives sometimes. We've all been there when someone has done really well at something and got lots of congratulations but it's the one slight criticism that they remember. I've got a noticeboard in the kitchen where I pin menus from meals out that I've loved or cards I've received that make me smile which is always a nice reminder of good times. As for recording 2013, hopefully more posts on my blog and to a certain extent in the writing and photos I'll be doing for my book. I'm loving your additions to your memory jar already and look forward to hearing about more of them over the year. Sometimes it's the simplest things that make us most happy. WW

  13. What a lovely idea! If I wasn't fairly sure that I would forget all about it within a few weeks I would nick it and follow suit...
