Puzzled

Needless to say there are plenty of things that I should be getting on with. Himself bought the heated propagator down from the loft yesterday, seed packets have been arriving in the post, the allotment annual master plan needs fine-tuning etc. but I am now seriously side-tracked. Whilst clearing out a cupboard last week I came across a jigsaw puzzle. How, when and why it entered this house is beyond recall. It must have been lurking in the cupboard though for some time and has never been assembled as the pieces were still sealed in a bag. Maybe it was a gift at some point or I bought it only to put it to one side only to promptly forget its existence.

It's been more years than I care to remember since I've completed a jigsaw other than the occasional online puzzle. However with the weather being still too cold to tempt me outside the jigsaw came out at the weekend. I thought that I should give it a go. It's a MONSTER - coming in at 1000 pieces and measuring 72 x 51cm. It was designed and produced by the National Trust. I am presuming that the garden features and houses are linked to National Trust properties, although there are no details to confirm this. The house in the centre looks hauntingly familiar but I wish that I could put a name to it.

I've been allowed the luxury of spreading this out on the breakfast bar. I think that himself sees this as a preferable alternative to plant pots filled with seedlings occupying the same space. Progress so far is slow - the outer perimeter is all in place bar one so far elusive piece. I'm now filling in on the left hand side slowly working towards the maze which looks rather challenging. What has surprised me is just how relaxing it is, so much so that I think that I could have another serious addiction on my hands. What about you and jigsaws - love them or would they be one of your candidates for 'Room 101'?

  1. I wouldn't put them in Room 101, but they're not something I do. I bought my dad one for Christmas 2011, and he had it spread all over the dining table, much to my mum's annoyance. He really enjoyed doing it so I bought him another for his birthday. This Christmas, my mum bought him a jigsaw holder thing, where you can store the jigsaw and just get it out whan you want to. She's obviously had enough of her dining table being out of action.

  2. Well why not? :) Hope you find that elusive piece soon, I'm sure you will eventually!

  3. NAH bought me a jigsaw puzzle for Christmas - 1,000 pieces depicting a cartoon garden centre. We've been delighted to find a jigsaw at quite a few of the holiday cottages we've been staying at recently. It's a nice companionable way to spend an evening together, though woe betide you if you find the last key piece to a section your companion was working on!

  4. That one's definitely not for room 101 that's for sure! It looks awesome! I visited some friends in spain one year and they had a couple of big jigsaws on the go and they had actually framed some too! They did look really good. Makes me want to get one!!

  5. Not room 101 .... When the children still lived at home we used to buy quite a complex jigsaw every christmas and leave on a table for people to pop a few pieces when the mood took them. As VP said above it is a nice companionable way to spend some time ... but you do need space to keep it up for a few days!

  6. How strange that you should post about jigsaw puzzles - I haven't done for years then out of the blue came the desire to do one again. I am in the middle of a 1000 piece seaside scene at the moment and enjoying every minute of it. Every time I pass the dining room table I am lured in to just find another piece.

  7. Love doing them, but haven't for a long time, must get them back out of the loft!! When the children were still at home, I used to buy one each Christmas, the harder the better!

  8. I love doing them as well but haven't for a while, my husband doesn't appreciate having his meals perched on one end of the dining room table. This looks like a good one, the last one that I did I had to have help finishing as it was still on the table on Christmas Eve, not the one just passed.

  9. My mum loves jigsaws especially at this time of the year. I bought her three for Christmas though it is becoming increasingly difficult to find ones she hasnt done as she also buys them from charity shops and then redonates them. I'm not very patient with jigsaws and tend towards the Vicar of Didley approach of trimming pieces to fit!!

  10. Used to like them, but they take up so much time! I like the picture on yours - not too much sky or water! ;-) Have fun!

  11. Oh that's a beautiful picture - it's been years since I last did a jigsaw.

  12. I've recently re-discovered jigsaws, though I confess the current one, Van Gogh's sunflowers, has me beat. All the pieces look the same! Driving me mad, not at all restful. Hope you have better luck with yours!
