Pear Shaped

Returning at almost midnight on a high from the RHS London Plant And Design Show a fortnight ago, I really came back to earth with a rapid bump the next morning. A phone call from my Mum's neighbour informed me that my Mum was quite poorly. To cut a long story short I've been away until last night looking after her. Mum has had bronchitis, possibly pneumonia. She is now almost 89, disabled, frail and has been through some tough times over the last few years. She seems to be improving albeit very slowly but apart from the medication is in need of some tlc. Unfortunately none of my siblings live near to her, so we are busy trying to juggle out a rota to ensure that she has somebody with her for the immediate future. Hence my sudden lack of blogging and severely reduced blog visiting. I'm back home for a few days now though so hope to do some catching up and also to make some inroads into my completely stalled gardening/allotment tasks. I have a feeling that I may sowing fewer seeds this year! In my absence my sweet peppers have grown into triffids and himself managed to lose a box of seed potatoes that had been delivered. I located them almost within ten minutes of walking through the door. Today has been a beautiful day so my dear thoughtful man took me out for a good walk to blow away the cobwebs. We visited the Winter Garden at Dunham Massey - more soon on that I hope and then went on to a garden centre for a reccie and lunch. That man knows how to make me happier!

PS I've lost ten pounds in weight since I've been away - every cloud has a silver lining and all that!

  1. I'm so sorry to hear about your mum, Anna. It's so worrying when they're ill as they get older. I do hope she improves soon. It sounds as though you need some tlc yourself, so don't forget to look after you too, you'll be no good to your lovely mum if you dont.

  8. Hoping your mother's health improves. I neglected my garden last summer to help care for a family member, and I'm glad I did. Those last few months with her are precious memories.

  9. Hope you Mum is soon feeling much better Anna, such a worry for all of you her being so frail and distant, not a great combination. I suppose the weight loss is an upside of sorts. As to fewer seeds being sown, there are always plug plants, and anyway, people are more important. I am trying to restrain my jealousy at the thought of triffid-like sweet peppers since mine barely have true leaves yet!!! Take care of yourself, though it sounds as if himself is on the case.

  10. Anna:
Echoing the thoughts of everyone else, sorry to hear about your Mom's recent misfortunes. Being there might mean neglecting your garden, but you will be happier knowing you were able to reach out and help when she needed it most. The garden will be there, waiting ever so patiently for your return. Remember to look out for yourself and Himself as well. Its hard when you have to balance so many things, but we all persevere in the long run! Happy Spring!

  11. I'm so sorry to hear about your Mum. I hope she makes a speedy recovery. The garden waits for us. Once I had to take a year away from mine. It was fine, although a bit weedy. Glad you got to take a long walk outside - we gardeners just crave that touch of nature.

  13. Your post made me think of the famous John Lennon quote "Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans". Sorry your Mum's been so poorly - look after yourself Anna, and enjoy lots of fresh air while you can.
