In A Vase On Monday ~ 'Mark 2'

Weather permitting bank holidays are usually spent at the allotment as himself refuses point blank to take to the roads. Today was no exception and a most productive day was spent planting French beans and mange tout peas as well as topping up some of the raised beds. There was the odd bit of weeding, the odd chat or two and I picked a handful of herbs for a vase. However the herbs I hit on, with one exception, did not like being snipped in their prime and went into full sulk mode back at base. Even being plunged into water did not do the trick - they have remained floppy and uncooperative so this necessitated a change of plan.

So this is vase mark 2. Its ingredients are restricted to the allium schoenoprasum aka chive flowers from the allotment, along with just one head of allium hollandicum 'Purple Sensation' picked from the garden. They are sited on the mantelpiece above the fire in the living room. I have absolutely no idea how the vase fell in to my hands. I like its shape and feeling of chunkiness although it does not hold much.

For the record the herbs that did not make it were bronze fennel, golden marjoram, sage flower buds and comfrey. They are sitting outside in a vase but on last inspection have not perked up at all. They may well be heading in the direction of the compost heap come morning.

Other Monday vases crammed full of fabulous flowers can be admired over at 'Rambling In The Garden' thanks as always to Cathy.

  1. Such a gorgeous colour and they're so photogenic. I need some new alliums for my garden, I don't know what's happened to my Purple Sensation but they've disappeared.

    1. Thanks Jo. What a shame that yours have gone underground. You will have to treat yourself this autumn to some replacements.

  2. What a shame about the other herbal contents Anna - but these alliums look gorgeous anyway, as does your little green vase. I love it too - top marks all round! Thanks for sharing and glad you had a good day at the allotment.

    1. I was surprised that they flopped so quickly Cathy and they were the perfect companions for the chive flowers. It was just not to be. It was a most enjoyable day at the allotment.

  3. I love the purple flowers complemented with the green. Too bad the herbs disappointed you today, but sounds like you had an otherwise productive day. Susie

    1. I could only bring myself to pick one Sue :) In answer to your question I'm not sure as I've never picked one ie 'Purple Sensation' before but I have an inkling that it will last for some time.

  6. That's nice to see the big and small allium globes together. And the vase is pretty too. Perhaps you could chop and freeze/eat some of those herbs before they get sent to the compost heap! ;-)

    2. Allium Purple Sensation is such an important plant in our garden at this time of year. Along with the Chives they both make a lovely seasonal vase. ( I like the vase to)

  7. I think Alliums are one of the few flowers that look best in a vase on their own, most Alliums don't do well here and so will stop wasting my money buying them and concentrate on the ones that do.

  8. Anna I adore this vase...so simple and modern looking....but what a fabulous statement it makes. I was looking to eat some chive flowers and then started thinking about using them in an upcoming vase....
