In A Vase On Monday ~ 'Anyone Who Had A Heart'

Taking centre stage this week is the second of my chrysanthemum collection to flower. I know that Cathy, our intrepid 'In A Vase on Monday' hostess also bought the same collection of rooted chrysanthemum cuttings from Sarah Raven as I did earlier in the year. So I've been wondering how her plants are faring of late. Any blooms yet Cathy? We are both keen to see the acid green 'Froggy' leap into action.

This particular chrysanthemum goes by the name of 'John Riley' and it's a tender perennial. The flowers took me by complete surprise returning home on Friday after an unexpected absence of a good few days. The vase has been lurking on a hall window sill for some considerable time but has never been used for flowers before. It's an Emma Bridgewater Pink Hearts Milk Bottle Vase and was purchased a few years ago via eBay.

The neck of the vase is on the small side but three flowers slipped in nicely. Now I will wait with bated breath to see if the flowers live up to the information that they will look good in a vase for up to three weeks. The rest of the collection has still to flower but there are buds and tantalising hints of colour so fingers crossed for a late autumn show.

  1. I always look forward to chrysanthemums at this time of year, I don't grow them myself but Mick's uncle always keeps my vases filled with the blooms he grows. I've got a vase full of yellow ones at the moment and they look stunning, I can't remember what variety he said they were now. Fingers crossed that some of your other varieties come in to flower soon, though I do think displays of just one variety at a time look fabulous.

    1. Oh how nice to have somebody bring you regular bouquets Jo. So far I've only been able to pick single varieties but as you say they look quite effective en masse. I'm not sure how a mix would look and probably will not find out this year :)

  2. Yes do let us know if the flowers last. The arrangement looks very 'contemporary' in the vase. The colours match beautifully.

    1. I will certainly report back Noelle if the old grey matter proves reliable in this particular instance. Initially I was going to plonk them in another vase but then noticed the colour match.

  3. I trust you are not regretting your earworm title (and I meant to say I did consider using 'Nights in White Satin' for mine, but thought it needed a white vase which I wasn't sure if I had...)!! I have moved the 'indoor' chrysanths into the greenhouse but yesterday noticed some colour on one of other the 'outdoor' ones, which looks the same colour as yours - must check the label. The orange one has a fair few flowers - but I am all but decided that I just don't like chrysanthemums very much... Still looking forward to seeing Froggy though!! Saying that, a couple of blooms in a vase like yours is infinitely more attractive than a lanky plant with random clusters of them :) Your Emma Bridgewater vase has the perfect colour of hearts to suit them as well! Thanks for sharing, and apologies for not enthusing about chrysanths generally...

    1. I'm not regretting the title ..... yet Cathy. I can't believe that you do not have a white vase or have I misinterpreted what you've said. No need for apologies. I'm not sure whether I've been totally convinced by chrysanths. My plants are are leggy too although I must confess that they have not been in receipt of much tlc. I may give them another chance next year before the jury passes verdict. I was just so pleased to see some new colour when I came home :)

    2. In hindsight even though I am sure I haven't got a white 'vase' I realise I do have a couple of little white jugs which I use for cream and gravy which might have done...hmm, I need to have a catalogue of all my vases and receptacles but I might find the quantity a little embarrassing!

  4. That's a really gorgeous colour. Chrysanthemums last for ages in a vase don't they?

    1. Thanks for your visit and comment Sue. I've noticed that they seem to last for a while when I've had bouquets including them but I'm not sure about the three week life expectancy. Time to test it out :)

  5. I love the deep red colour and at first I thought it was an exotic dahlia and not a hardy chrysanthemum. I used to grow a gorgeous bronze one at the allotment which came back year after year but I ripped it out because I got tired of the flowers. Wish I hadn't now. Hope you have lots of nice surprises at the allotment, Autumn raspberries are still going strong here as are runner beans and rocket. I love Borlotti beans crushed and served on bruschetta and I think I may do that as a first course tonight.

    1. I'm glad that it's not just me Sarah as I can see a similarity to a dahlia too. Oh what a shame that you yanked out your bronze beauty but sometimes familiarity breeds contempt :) I have been to the allotment today and there were one or two pleasant surprises. A bunch of sweet peas came home with me along with 'Polka' raspberries, the beans and a bucketful of grapes which himself is now mascerating. The best surprise was that quite a few apples were still hanging on for me pick them.

  6. The deep red mums look fabulous in the milk vase with the matching dark hearts, Anna. My one bronzy mum was preserved from last year as a cutting in water, but I neglected to plant it in a pot so long I didn't get any flowers. Maybe it will last under lights until next year.

    1. Oh many thanks for your visit Hannah. What a shame about your bronze mum but maybe you will have more joy next year.

  11. Chrysanthemum are invaluable as other flowers in the garden are coming to an end. These are a beautiful colour and I love your Emma Bridgewater vase. I have bought lots of vases on eBay and got some real bargains.

    1. The late colour was most welcome Chloris. I'm not sure whether my vase was a bargain as it's some time since I bought it. I'm always slightly apprehensive about purchasing china or glass via eBay but up to now have only had positive experiences. It's been a while since I've perused eBay for vases ..... I think that you may have tempted me to have a peek.

  13. I mentioned in my post today that I wasn't al that sure if the space was justified for Chrysanthemums, but the colour of yours almost persuades me to give them another try. The vase is perfect for them.

  14. A great tune. In fact the vid on you tube of Cilla performing that back in the sixties is a gem.

I'd like to see how the other s.raven cuttings come along.
