In A Vase On Monday ~ 'Evergreen'

In my vase today is a stem of hippeastrum cybister 'Evergreen'. This was one of my purchases from Pheasant Acre Plants at the Great Dixter Autumn Plant Fair last October. It is the most expensive hippeastrum that I've ever purchased, but has been well worth every penny its seven pounds producing not one, not two but three stems of flowers which are a most subtle and beautiful shade of green. It was quite breezy this morning when I took the photo so I made an effort to stop the stem from gyrating about by lobbing some redundant so called luminous stones into the vase. They are redundant as they never glowed in the dark as they should have done. I was thinking of disposing of them completely but they came in handy today. My 'vase' was a seasonal caramelised red onion chutney jar in a former life.

Thanks as always to our lovely hostess Cathy, over at 'Rambling In The Garden' who encourages us to share our vases every Monday.

  1. It's so pretty, Anna! I purchased a couple of these bulbs and grew them in a pot the first year before planting them out in the garden. Technically, they'll naturalize here but mine don't seem so inclined :(

  2. Evergreen is a lovely flower - I had one a few years ago and loved the simple shape as well as the fresh colour. Yours certainly gave you value for money, making up for the expense!

  3. Oh that is so pretty, Anna - presumably the bulb was grown inside? Will it be pot luck whether it grows again next year, like other hippeastrum? Why would somebody think of producing luminous pebbles, I wonder? Mind you, when I was looking for the large green house plant I planned to buy with a Christmas voucher, the garden centre was selling sanseveria (or similar) with the tips of its leaves painted in luminous paint....

  6. I did wonder what the 'blobs' were, Anna - thank you for explaining! Frustrating that the stones never glowed as they were supposed to though. (I've had 'solar' garden lamps that needed Caribbean levels of sunshine to light up properly.) The flower is very beautiful but will it grow again next year? I've always thought of them as one off flowers so have never bought one but I imagine yours was not cheap from Dixter plant fair. If you replant it, please let us know if it regrows! xx
