In A Vase On Monday ~ 'A Whiter Shade Of Pale'

My 'In a Vase On Monday' morphed overnight. I originally put it together yesterday afternoon to photograph. Try as I would though I could not get the creamy double hellebore to hold its head to attention and look at the camera. Then the skies darkened and rain got in the way of play. I nipped outside this morning and replaced it with a single white flower which was much more obliging.

It was a beautiful weekend here which bringing to mind a quote that I have used here before but it was seven years ago so I think that I can be excused the repetition:

"There is always in February some one day, at least, when one smells the yet distant, but surely coming, summer" - Gertrude Jekyll, 1843 - 1932.

It was such a day on Saturday as it was on 23rd February 2012, when I used this particular quote. The temperature had hit the magical 60 degrees mark and I spent the best part of the day outside pottering in the garden. It was not quite as warm on Saturday but after a dip our temperature is set to rise again later in the week so we might yet get there in a day or two.

Anyway I digress. Keeping my hellebore company are some twiggy bits in the shape of beech and cornus as well as some leafy loveliness is provided by eucalyptus gunnii. The vase itself is part off a present of a set of five vases from my lovely sister.

Thanks as always to Cathy over at 'Rambling In The Garden' for hosting and encouraging us to start the week in such a satisfying manner.

  1. Simple and beautiful, we can't get enough of them. We've had some wonderful weather then today - hail showers. Spring may be on the horizon but we mustn't get carried away.

  2. The single ones do seem less shy and I find it so annoying that the pretty doubles hang their heads. This white one looks lovely in the green vase - a perfect colour combination. :)

  3. It's simply beautiful, Anna. Summer isn't something gardeners in my area look forward to but, as we've had only a few sunny days this past month and few if any days with 60F temperatures, I'm looking forward to the warmer temperatures that should come with spring. Temperatures consistently in the 50sF aren't normal here even in January and certainly not in mid-February.

  4. Your Feb 2012 post was few weeks before I started bblogging so this quote is new to me and shows just how instinctive that feeling is for a gardener - and what a joyous feeling it is! We will ignore the fact that a certain beast paid a visit at the end of February last year...! It was very obliging of your hellebore to lift her face to grace the photograph - so pretty in the little green vase which I recall, although like an old ink bottle, isn't. Thanks for sharing Anna

  6. That looks gorgeous :) I love the emerald green of the vase which contrasts perfectly with the pure white. BTW I said yes please to a little parcel over at mine if you are happy to oblige :) :) :)

  7. I love the quote; I didn't remember it from before and it isn't one of Gertrude's quotes I remember either so thank you. Your white Hellebore is perfect.

  8. Having spent Sunday at Ashwoods with a talk on Hellebores...I can say that they are breeding plants whose flowers are more visible...but they have found that upward facing flowers are not so good as the stamens drop onto the 'not'petals' and rot. There were some beauties...

  9. Your arrangement is perfect and I love the way the light plays on the different leaves and stems, and then there is that perfect white bloom at the heart of the arrangment.
