IAVOM ~ Holding On

It is still just about holding on to summer here, although the end of the week is promising a definite taste of autumn with rain and gales predicted for some areas. My last collection of this year's summer snips for 'In A Vase On Monday' includes :
  • Daucus carrota 'Purple Kisses' - a couple of stems from last week's vase are still going strong but I've added another stem with white flowers. This is an annual grown from seed which can either be sown in spring or late summer.
  • Aster divaricatus - a late flowering perennial.  I bought my original plant from the sales area at Powis Garden in Wales over ten years ago. It has dark wiry stems and the tips of the petals slowly change from white to a soft lavender shade as the season progresses. It is resistant to mildew and does well in a moist shady spot. It's a quiet plant but one that I wouldn't be without.
  • Clematis jouiniana x 'Praecox' - a late summer flowering clematis, loved by bees and butterflies which could either be grown as a scrabbler as mine is or as a climber. It's only fault is that it is not a pretty sight at all as it fades.
  • Thalictrum delavayi 'Hewitt's Double' I love it's soft colour, the delicate little button flowers and it's airy ways. This plant came home with me earlier this year from a plant sale as a replacement, as my original plant or possibly a replacement too slowly fizzled out over the years.
A big thanks as always to Cathy over at 'Rambling In The Garden' for hosting. Do pop over there and visit other bloggers to see what is delighting them in their vases this week.

  1. Hi Anna, I am holding on to summer in my vase this week too! I absolutely love your vase! Such soft pretty colours and forms! Not ready to tip into autumn yet! Amanda. /therunningwave290580645.wordpress.com/2021/09/20/hanging-on-to-summer-in-vase-on-monday/

    1. Thanks Amanda. Never ready for it but it's been decided for us - it's definitely autumn whether we like it or not! Good to see that your blog is back up and running again.

  2. Oh this is lovely, Anna, and that thalictrum really is a beauty - mine struggle to estblish here although a new Black Stockings did flower this year but not for very long. Do yours flower all summer? I added this aster last year and agree it's a great plant

    1. It's a subtle beauty Cathy as is the aster. Thaltictrums do well here - I think that it is a combination of both moisture and shade. 'Hewitt's Double' flowers for a few weeks as does my white 'Splendide'. I have 'Black Stockings too' - the plant that is 😂

    2. Forgot to say that if you do go for 'Hewitt's Double' it doesn't come through until quite late in spring as does 'Splendide'.

  3. I love that sweet Clematis, as well as the Thalictrum I don't have a hope of growing. Summer is still entrenched here, although our night temperatures are falling. We can't expect any real rain for at least a couple of months yet but the morning marine layer is adding a touch of moisture which provides a little relief for a very dry garden.

    1. Oh I imagine that it must be too hot and dry for them with you Kris but I'm envious of all the plants that you can grow and I can't. Hope that you have more in the way of that marine layer.

  4. Such a beautiful, delicate arrangement, Anna, well done. To still have Thalictrum in flower is amazing. Got the clematis too, it's such a star plant. Wishing you happy autumn days, xx Annette

  5. Very pretty. I love Thalictrum but a newly planted one did not thrive at all so I am trying again with a taller one. The Clematis is lovely too.

  6. Oh I will keep my fingers crossed that you have better luck second time around Cathy as they are great plants and no trouble.
