Free To A Good Home!

I have a spare copy of the late Elspeth Thompson's 'The Wonderful Weekend Book' on my hands to give away as not surprisingly entries for my recent 'Some Seasonal Silliness' quiz were thin on the ground. Well truth be told they were not existent ~ perhaps the festive season was bad timing on my part. So what I will do dear readers is pick a recipient out of a plant pot or the ilk, from anybody who leaves a comment here by the end of the weekend i.e. midnight on Sunday.

I treated myself to this book in December 2008 as a Christmas present to myself and you can read more about it, by either clicking at the link at the top of the page or visiting here. As well as being a regular gardening columnist for a Sunday national newspaper, Elspeth was also the author of several books. Although this is not a gardening book there are quite a few garden related snippets and I am sure that it would appeal to many of you. It is best summed up by its subtitle ~ ' Reclaim Life's Simple Pleasures". I will post the name of the winner towards the end of next week ~ in the meantime I hope that you have a wonderful weekend!

  1. I used to read this woman's column in the Guardian - about converting railway carriages into a home - I just looked at her blog and was sad to find she died last March rip

  2. Hi Anna - thanks very much for your comment on my gardening blog. I love the poem down the right-hand side of your blog - it sums up my feelings on a sunny day here in Northants! I was going to comment anyway but see there is a prize too - wow. Sorry to hear about the snowdrops. Mine are doubles that were here when I came - I've split them up a bit and they seem not to be eaten. Probably because my cat used to keep the mice down. Hope you can regenerate your collection!
NB Carol Klein showed how to split snowdrop bulbs in her last BBC prog last week.

  3. Anna, I have a much treasured copy of Elspeth's book that I'm very attached to but nevertheless could I still enter your draw? I know a young lady who would appreciate this book very much and seeing as I'm not very good at parting with books - she would love it in lieu of my copy!! Unorthodox I know but its worth a try!!

Oops - I had completely forgotten about your Seasonal Silliness quiz ...!

  4. How generous of you Anna - what a lovely idea. It is a book I have toyed with getting - but then my life does not really have weekdays and weekends - just gardening!! :)

It was so sad that Elspeth died last year - I enjoyed her blog.

  7. I meant to have a go at your quiz but completely forgot about it. It was so sad that Elspeth died last year. I'd love for my name to be put in the plant pot so I can have a go at winning her book.

  8. Hi Anna - It was not lack of enthusiasm but lack of knowledge. I enjoyed your quiz but did not submit as 3 questions had me stumped. Are you going to publish the answers now?

  12. I would love to enter your draw. I have two of Elspeth Thompson's books - A tale of two gardens, and Urban Gardener, which I enjoyed reading immensely. I was so saddened when she died last year. I have just stumbled upon your blog, which looks most interesting and I will definitely 'follow' you.

  13. Hi Anna

Appreciative I'm over the deadline but all the same, I started to do your quiz but I couldn't answer all the questions and then opening a bottle of red burgundy was no help at all!
