"ZING, ZING, ZING WENT MY HEARTSTRINGS!" ~ when I saw my new lily finally open up its flowers for the first time on Sunday. I fell for Lilium LA Hybrid 'Eyeliner' when I came across mention of her on 'The Patient Gardener's Weblog' last year. Helen has posted about this delightful lily here and more recently here. Not wanting to risk the possibility of being disappointed I placed an order last autumn with Harts - a nursery specialising in the sale of lily bulbs.
Three well packaged bulbs arrived in a cardboard box in the depths of February. Duly planted in a pot (note to self - must plant in a bigger pot next year) there were soon signs of growth. A one woman vigilante patrol was mounted against the dreaded lily beetle, which was successful on the whole, bar one or two little nibbles of the foliage of one bulb. I caught two of the little beasties in the act of munching but no more damage thereafter. I was convinced that the buds might open whilst we were away on holiday but they teased and teased a while longer before revealing their true colours. I am quite smitten.
love that song

Don't much like lilies, but I make an exception for Eyeliner. This one I want!
ReplyDeleteThat's a pretty "zingy" lily, all right! Beautiful.
ReplyDeleteZooooo pretty!
ReplyDeleteZoning the ABC, please come and see.
That flower is so pretty, it would make my heart go Zing, Zing, Zing too.
ReplyDeleteExquisite!
ReplyDelete"Zing" for sure, Anna. Those are beautiful flowers... and the eyeliner is apt. :-)
ReplyDeleteLOVE your floral foto! And my heart went ZING, too, when I saw it!

Zing is how I felt when I finally got an orchid to bloom.
ReplyDeleteShe's a beauty. I have some lilies blooming in my garden at the moment, but none as gorgeous as Eyeliner. Another one for the wish list.
ReplyDeleteI'm not a lily fan. I grew some last year, more for a laugh than out of desire - but this is lovely. I'd grow this one with pleasure.

Lovely, glad you werent disappointed
ReplyDeleteOh my, she is beautiful!! Isn't it nice when our expectations are exceeded. :)
ReplyDeleteLillies are one of my favourites.. and they last forever in a vase too. This one is exceptionally beautiful.. and beautifully clicked too.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful lily, Anna. Definitely worth the wait and the vigilance. I love it.
ReplyDeleteAnna, This is the second time recently I've seen photos of this stunning lily, and it makes my hearstrings go zing, too. This might be enough to brave the depredations of the red lily beetle and try growing lilies again. -Jean
ReplyDeleteZuper! Wondered how you'd manage the Z post and you didn't disappoint. What stunning lines - very tempting
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely lily it's a stunner, although Day lilies are my favourite as they dont get the lily beetle which is a real pain.
ReplyDeleteThis is a gorgeous lily! There are no white daylilies, so I planted some white 'Casablanca' oriental lilies, but they seem to have stopped growing. 'Eyeliner' is now going on my wish list for next year!
ReplyDeleteThanks for visiting; I know how difficult it is to keep up with blogging this time of year, let alone with other obligations. Always happy to have you drop by!
Beautiful. Almost makes me want to rethink my anti lily stance, but I honestly can't be bothered with all the lily beetle patrolling. I shall enjoy yours instead!
ReplyDeleteI like the delicate splashes - as if someone has had a go with a tiny paintbrush.
ReplyDeleteLily beetles are little horrors. I had loads on my Fritillarias this your. I am glad they are bright red so I can see them!
