I'm cheating this week with my 'In A Vase on Monday' contribution so I hope that I'm forgiven. Back in November I purchased a couple of seasonal bulbs from a certain German supermarket - that little and often one. Both were hippeastrum bulbs to give them their proper name although I still think of them as amaryllis. One was in a box with bowl and planting medium included, whilst the other was a ready made job in a glass container complete with seasonal decorations. It was obviously more expensive than the boxed version but then I can use the container again as well as some of the decorations so I decided to treat myself. It has been exciting to inspect the bulb daily for signs of growth and after a tantalising wait to see the first flower open a couple of days before Christmas. There was no indication of what the colour of the flower was when I bought the bulb so that was part of the excitement,
Thanks as always to Cathy over at 'Rambling In The Garden' for her wonderful hosting skills. Wishing all my blogging friends a most peaceful and joyous New Year and happy gardening in the twelve months of the year to come! π±
I love it! I go to that same German supermarket and they did not have those Amaryllis (can't spell the other word yet) A wonderful holiday treat, Happy New Year, Anna...Amelia
ReplyDeleteThanks Amelia. I just can't keep with all these name changes. They always manage to come up with an uglier name too!
DeleteNot cheating at all...I love it. I am about to pot up mine in glass containers...I agree a bit more expensive but can be used year after year. Happy New Year!
ReplyDeleteYou have reassured me Donna. It was definitely an investment for the future π
DeleteOf course you couldn't pass that up, Anna! The Amaryllis/Hippeastrum is very pretty - it looks like it could be 'Apple Blossom'. Happy new year!
ReplyDeleteI thought that it looked familiar Kris so thanks for providing me with the name π
DeleteOh, what a pretty one Anna. And how nice that it didn't turn out to be plain old red, although its timing would have been perfect for some festive colour. The pink ones are somehow fresher and remind us of spring. Wishing you peace and joy for 2024 too Anna!
ReplyDeleteThanks for your comment and good wishes for the new year Cathy. I'm quite happy with it as it is but would have welcomed any other colour. I'm just delighted to have colour at this time of year! I'm a bit underwhelmed with the size of the flower heads though but then you can't have everything π
DeleteOh hurrah - just in time for Christmas (and quite fun not knowing the colour, even though I would normally prefer to choose...)! I wondered about 'Appleblossom' too - my first of the boxed bulbs is just opening now and looks the same as yours. I had to use different compost and a proper pot though - did you? I was wondering about a vase with mine next week but will need to think of a different way of displaying it... Happy New Year to both of you, Anna! ps I like the plain old red variety! π
ReplyDeleteYes it was perfect timing indeed Cathy π I would have preferred to choose my own colour too but can do that next year and just pop a bulb in. As for the boxed set I used the pot but thought that the compost was like dust so improved it.
DeleteI think you made a wise purchase Anna and the color turned out very nice. Happy New Year!
ReplyDeleteLovely colour!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful. I also purchased two amaryllis from my local German market. They offer great plants all year long, something I really appreciate. One of the two was a white one, gorgeous blooms, and for the first time ever, I had three stalks of blooms. I couldn't believe it. It's still standing and ready for the third stalk to open.
ReplyDeleteThe colour is one that I would choose if buying an Amaryllis - it looks great in the vase with its decorations. Best Wishes for a very happy New Year!
ReplyDeleteIs that variety Appleblossom. I'm waiting to see if ours reflowers. If it does it will be its fourth year.
ReplyDeleteYes, but, what beautiful tiles around your fireplace - with lilies !!
