Garden Bloggers Bloom Day - July

Posted by Picasa

Although still high summer hints of autumn lurk in the garden - the elderflowers are now developing berries and the glowing white chestnut candles of May are now conkers in waiting. I have been participating in Garden Bloggers Bloom Day since March this year and as the year unfolds I have noticed that my colour palette is dominated by pinks, blues, shades of purple and white as well as green. There are very few reds, yellows and oranges in the garden. I must do something to rectify this sorry state of affairs.

Top row - left to right - geranium pratense 'Plenum Caeruleum', geranium' Salome' and rosa 'The Fairy' - this does not come into flower into July but then flowers for a long spell.

Middle row - left to right - astrantia maxima, unknown heuchera and petunias in a container and verbascum 'Jackie in Pink'

Bottom row left to right - a buddleia obtained as a cutting from my parent's garden, geranium pratense 'Plenum Violaceum' and what I think is geranium 'Rozanne' but it did not have a label when I bought it. I rescued it from the bargain shelf of our local Homebase store where it was looking rather worse for wear. I think that she was suffering from extreme dehydration and neglect so I am glad that I bought her home with me.

More June blooms can be added to the ever growing wish list at May Dreams Gardens hosted by Carol.

  1. Lovely blooms, Anna! Pink and purple are my two favorite colors in the garden, too.

  4. It looks lovely to me! But I know what you mean. . .I follow a color wheel without realizing it and then want to "rectify it." Interesting that your The Fairy starts up in July. Ours ended in June, though if it hadn't been so hot, it would linger 'til July. It will spring back up for us this fall.

  5. You are good with geraniums: can you recommend a white one? Pure white is what I would like to add to my pinks and blues and purples.
My plenum caeruleum looks a little different from yours. More purple and more like a Parma violet.
Ah, just found the label: it is G.p.plenum violaceum.

Have you tried G.Patricia? Reddish purple with a black eye.

  6. Hi Anna~~ Just to confuse things, I've found that 'Jolly Bee' Geranium looks and behaves virtually identically to 'Rozanne.'

I hope autumn will stay out of the picture for awhile. Summer is never long enough.

  8. Anna:
A wonderful post for GGBD. Its been a very strange summer here weather-wise, and I noticed that leaves of Disanthus cercidifolius are starting to turn already!

I was looking round the garden and discovered my palate is similar to yours with blue, pink, mauve, white and purple - one lonely red and only the palest of yellow, until Ligularia 'The Rocket' bursts forth, in the next week or so. I was plesantly surprised that I have expanded my palate ever so slowly!

  9. No, no, don't rectify the situation - I love a color palette of pinks, blues, purples & white. Ok, throw in a little lemon yellow & maybe a ruby red, but leave out the orange. ;^) Your flowers are all gorgeous, but I particularly like the Astrantia maxima, which is next to impossible to find around here.

  10. I forgot to mention a small-flowered Daylily, as you asked. I really like 'Penny's Worth,' a very small flowered yellow thing. It reblooms and has grass-like foliage, which looks a lot better than regular Daylily foliage. A good mini red is 'Little Business,' which also reblooms. It has larger flowers than 'Penny's Worth,' but still smaller than the big Daylilies.

  13. I find that my GBBD posts really help me see how the colour pallette in the garden is developing.

I do like your purple and pinks

  14. I like the Verbascum.

I'm a cranesbill fan, could that blue one possibly be 'Jolly Bee'.

  17. Happy GBBD Anna, very nice montage... similar colours up here too although I don't plan to add more yellow... I'm going for the deep wine reds :-D

  18. I like your colour palette. There is so much variation even in a limited palette - I think it makes you look at the colours more and notice the subtle differences.

  20. Pretty collage. I have a couple of the hardy geraniums, a pink and a purple which were from a garden yard sale, both are not named but that really does not matter to me.

  22. The geranium' Salome' and astrantia maxima really caught my eye. I have a lot of purples and pinks as well. I've tried to throw in a few reds, but there aren't many red flowering plants that I like. I personally think that the colors you have are beautiful and calming.
