In A Vase On Monday ~ 'Not Fade Away'

Today's opportunity to pick flowers and take photographs for 'In A Vase On Monday' was a race against time. Once again the weather gods have decided on rain to celebrate a bank holiday with rain. They were considerate enough to throw a dry interlude in this afternoon, although there is the promise of more wet stuff on the cards before the day is done.

In this week's vase are :
  • Sprays from an inherited honeysuckle which was picked and bought home yesterday from the allotment.
  • Astrantia which are now at their peak. There are two varieties in the vase, names long forgotten.

  • Some wispiness in the shape of flowers from a grass that I think is some sort of sedge.
  • Fading out now but still retaining a paler shade of their true colour are the pink flowers from what I think is viburnum plicatum 'Pink Beauty'. I really should have cut some of these last Monday. A big confession and a source of hang my head in shame, is that I bought the viburnum home some years ago and plonked it down at the side of the side of the cold frame whilst I decided where to plant it. Well procrastination got the better of me. It is still there, taller than me and rooted firmly into the ground. I think that an attempt to move it now might well prove fatal. I'm planning to take some cuttings this year and if they strike the progency will be allocated a more deserving spot.
Thanks as always to our hostess the lovely Cathy who is coming up with roses today over at 'Rambling In The Garden'. I'm wondering what will be starring in other vases today as spring is now well as summer is slowly nudging spring out of the way.

    1. Thanks Sue. I thought that they went well together but it's good to have somebody else confirm it :)

  2. I adore Astrantias but, sadly, they don't like my climate. I hope you find a way to save the Viburnum - the flowers are lovely!

    1. Oh that's a shame Kris as they are beautiful. I am dubious whether the viburnum would survive if moved but hopefully I can take cuttings or buy a duplicate. I'm just annoyed with myself for procrastinating!

  3. This is so pretty and airy and pink and white. Everything is gorgeous, especially the astrantia. I never seem to be able to grow it very well. I'm glad it's not just me who neglects plants, I always mean well...

  5. Lovely! I always think Astrantias are such romantic flowers and look pretty in rain or sun. I hope the sun made an appearance on your bank holiday after all!

    1. They always look good Cathy no matter what. The day wasn't a complete washout if I remember rightly but compared to the weather the week before it was disappointing.

  6. This is so lovely and vaporous and pink and white. Everything is beautiful, particularly the astrantia. I never appear to have the capacity to develop it extremely well....

  7. You are asking for trouble with these earworm titles Anna! Your soft pink vase is most appealing although I am a little concerned that you are suggesting that astrantias are at their peak now - are they really? If so, I don't think I have noticed that before although I know that when I chop back 'Buckland' it does produce more flowers so I better make sure I deadhead all of mine to try and keep them going. Your grass certainly looks like Luzula nivea

    1. I know - I'm already getting tired of hearing the tune in my head :) I think that the astrantias may be earlier this year than normal here Cathy so they are looking in full fettle at the moment. In fact some flowers were already fading when I picked but I'm not sure whether they got scorched by the very hot weather at the end of last week. Thanks for the grass id. It's come back to me now but had slipped my mind at the time.

  8. Beautiful vases Anna; I'm very envious of your rain, but I'm sure you would have preferred more sun for the Bank Holiday.

    1. Thanks for your comment Christina. I didn't mind the rain too much for myself but felt for people who had the day off work only for it to be wet. Such a shame when it had been so warm and summery only a couple of days or so before.

  10. Your vases are utterly charming and romantic, very girly I'd say and I love them :) I've the same problem as Kris - they do quite well in spring but sulk all through the summer. The Viburnum is delightful too. Best xx
