A Little Bit of Local History

D IS FOR :

DOWNTOWN!

Himself hails from the city of Liverpool and towards the end of last year took a guided tour of the city which he greatly enjoyed. He got to see some buildings to which the public are not often admitted and found out some fascinating facts about his birthplace. This is the view from the former Martins Bank Building, which looks out directly onto Liverpool Town Hall. The statue on the dome of the roof is a ten feet high statue of Minerva, the Roman goddess of wisdom. The statue was designed by Felix Rossi, who was sculptor to King George IV. In the same street; Dale Street there are other fine old buildings as well as examples of modern architecture. Do click on the photo for a better view. These weekly tours are led by local historian Frank Carlyle and if you ever find yourself in Liverpool on a Tuesday, it is an experience not to be missed. Must do it myself one of these days. Thanks to himself for the photo that illustrates this post.

Do not dally but get yourself down to ABC Wednesday, kindly hosted by Denise Nesbitt, for some delightful posts on the letter D.

  2. Anna:
To have the view that is afforded to Minerva on a daily basis. What a spectacular piece of architecture! I especially love the french styled panes that make up the large expanse of windows! T be able to stand in its amazing hostorical glory..... I am sad that Canada isn't an older country filled with such architectural wonders! Thank you for the history lesson and great photo!

  3. On our rare visits to London, one of the best bits is the guided walks. Thinks - maybe there's a blog post lurking?

  4. Great post for today! I'm planning on going to Liverpool one of these holidays - to meet a blog pal - and to visit northern Wales. My paternal grandfather was from Liverpool, so I have some history there.

  6. I've always been fascinated by these sculptures of gods and people atop federal/municipal buildings. Nice post, Anna. Useless bit of sort of synchronicity. I have an aunt named Minerva. Who lives near Liverpool, Nova Scotia. Okay, that was a bit of a reach, I admit.

  10. Dear Anna, What an amazing photograph. You obviously had a most interesting day.

I am afraid to say that the last time I was in Liverpool was for The Garden Festival many, many years ago. But it was fun! I also remember at the time visiting what was then the new Roman Catholic Cathedral. Oh dear, all so long ago!

  11. What a great idea to take a tour of the place where you live. We live in these towns and cities and yet there is so much we don't know about them, so much local history.

  15. Local tours of cities and towns are always interesting - I took an American friend on a London bus tour recently and enjoyed it so much! I learned things I never knew, even though I was born there.

  17. It can be so fun to tour a city we think we know and discover new sights. Minerva seems fascinated by the goings-on below. Perhaps one day I'll visit England, and maybe Liverpool, too. :)

  18. The wonderful city of Liverpool! Great photo of Minerva atop her dome.
It's funny, we often know more about foreign cities from our holidays abroad then we do about our own fine country! Great links Anna and I'm so glad you resisted the urge to mention a certain group ...!

Have a great weekend. Jeanne x
