'What A Lady'

H IS FOR?

HELLEBORES!

Hail to these heavenly harbingers of spring! Late in opening this year because of the cold weather their arrival is even more welcome. 'Mrs Betty Ranicar' photographed above started to show her colours at the weekend. She is supposed to come almost true from seed but sadly although she is has now had her fifth birthday, she has never set seed for me. Maybe this year!

Hop over now to ABC Wednesday for more on the letter H.

  7. I hope she eventually sets seed for you.

Everything's late this year. A bit of Honesty here; I don't grow any helebores, but that'll change. They produce some of the most beautiful flower colours I've ever seen.

  8. Hellebores are wonderful, but that Heuchera posted below (courtesy of Linked In) is simply stunning. I love Heucheras anyway, but this one is sublime.

  11. A double that comes true from seed? Yeeehaw! We will look for her. It does take several years for the seeds to show, they need two warm/cold treatments for the seed to germinate.

  16. My hellebore has never set seed either, Anna. Weird, isn't it? And my plant is probably ten years old. Ah the mysteries of the plant world.

  21. Maybe Anna there are not enough pollinating insects about - you might have to pollinate it yourself and see if that helps. I've never heard of that hellebore before but it looks lovely.
