The Fair Lady Galadriel

"Very tall Galadriel and Celeborn were, and the Lady no less tall than the Lord; and they were grave and beautiful. They were clad wholly in white; and the hair of the Lady was of deep gold… but no sign of age was upon them, unless it were in the depths of their eyes; for these were keen as lances in the starlight, and yet profound, the wells of deep memory."

~ extract from 'The Lord of The Rings', JR Tolkein.

Galadriel, is the very last of my snowdrops still in flower this year and is living up to her name. A most elegantly held large flower on a tall stem. She is new to me and was purchased last summer as a dormant bulb. She was selected from the gardens of the plantswoman Beth Chatto and was named after Galadriel, 'The Lady Of The Woods' in Tolkein's famous tale.

Meanwhile unlike two years ago when my main clumps of snowdrops were still going strong on 17th March after a long cold winter, there are no flowers left now. Time for me to get in and divide some before they disappear back underground.

  1. All my snowdrops are gone too but I don't mind. There is a real feeling in the garden that Spring is here. Hope you've had some lovely spring sunshine this weekend.

  2. Beautiful.

I saw a clump of snowdrops just today, unusual as I rarely if ever see them down here. I guess they're going strong as we've had a particularly cold couple of weeks in Feb. All that's changed, but we really need rain.

  3. Their flowering season just seems to be over so quickly. But there are plenty more plants out there just raring to take their place. I had only a few appear this year (I suspect the chickens may have dug up more that I thought) so I've planted some new bulbs (in a chicken-free area) for next year.

  4. I only have a few snowdrops in my garden but they're all still blooming at the moment. I think it's because they seem to come in to flower much later than other people's. They're in a shady area so this is probably why.

  5. A lovely name for a lovely plant! Galadriel has to be one of my favourite fiction characters ever in one of my favourite books ever. Nice to see her doing so well in your garden.

    Love the quote. :)

  6. I love that quote. Our snowdrops are at their best now, but we've had so little sun they hardly open at all!
