Garden Bloggers Muse Day - January 2010

'Ancient Music'

"Winter is icummen in,
Lhude sing Goddamm.
Raineth drop and staineth slop,
And how the wind doth ramm!
Sing: Goddamm.

Skiddeth bus and sloppeth us,
An ague hath my ham.
Freezeth river, turneth liver,
Damn you, sing: Goddamm.

Goddamm, Goddamm, 'tis why I am, Goddamm,
So 'gainst the winter's balm.

Sing goddamm, damm, sing Goddamm.
Sing goddamm, sing goddamm, DAMM".

~ Ezra Pound , 1885 -1972

January has started on a bitterly cold note here. I am glad I am not a bird.

More musing on the month of January can be perused over at Sweet Home and Garden Chicago.

  1. i hadn't ever thought of Ezra Pound as having a sense of humor. I should get to know him better. This is one of the reasons I love Muse Day.

  7. Funny poem, it is a fitting poem for today in Iowa as well. Glad I'm not a bird too.

  8. A perfect poem to match our sentiments on the weather I think!

  9. Very funny! Just what I needed this morning! I would not mind being a bird that had the good sense to fly south.

  10. My mom used to sing in a Renaissance group and the "real" version of that song was playing in my head while I read the Pound poem. Hilarious! Sorry you are ringing in the new year with icky weather. Happy New Year anyway!

  12. Sorry I missed this post on the first. I've never read this poem by Pound, but I agree with another reader--I didn't know he had a sense of humor. By the end of the month, I may be cursing the weather, too:)
