Slowly Drowning In A Sea Of Red Berrries

X IS FOR?

EXTRAORDINARY!

Yes I know that I am cheating again when it comes to x but try as I might I could not come up with the genuine article.

Last year I diligently planted some innocuous little strawberry runners kindly given to me by my allotment neighbours. This month we have been eating these delicious berries until they are coming out of our ears ~ what an extraordinary harvest it has been. They have been eaten at almost every meal it seems and passed along to neighbours and friends. Still they keep coming and coming, although I think that production and therefore consumption have now peaked. I have been scouring my cookery books and the internet for recipe suggestions other than the inevitable strawberry jam and strawberry ice cream. I am particularly tempted by Patient Gardener's post featuring a most delicious looking strawberry pavlova - oh get thee behind me temptation!

You will find more on the letter X over at ABC Wednesday kindly hosted each week by Denise Nesbitt.

  3. I had to link through, because strawberry pavlova must be my very favouritest (yes I know) summer dessert. EVER! eXtraordinary indeed!

  4. Oh one strawberry pavlova shared is not so bad and it would be a shame to waste the strawberries.

  5. Yum, yum, yum.
I have a flat of strawberries that I need to do something with before they grow fuzz. Later today I'm making a strawberry cobbler. its making me hungry thinking about it.

  7. For some odd reason, I really have a taste for strawberries all of a sudden. I'm asking myself why the heck I don't grow them. I used to have some but the were shaded out. Will add them to my list...

  8. I'm having a craving for some strawberry shortcake. The strawberries are just now in season here and I haven't even had one yet. EXceptional post.

  10. I'd love an eXtra large strawberry crop. This year I have none and I'm sad. Last year, I made strawberry sorbet in the ice cream maker and it makes my mouth water just to think about it. :) Beautiful berries.

I have made my first strawberry jam this year. Last year we were just eating them fresh.

  13. I'm sure a strawberry pavlova is just the thing to use up some of the strawberries. We've had a bumper crop this year too, wonderful.

  15. I love strawberries! I wish I could help you out by letting you toss some berries over to us!

I used to watch the Discovery Channel a few years ago, and there was this very funny and clever man named Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall who had a cooking program called 'River Cottage' or something like that. On one episode he made sandwiches out of strawberries! I have also put strawberries in a tossed salad! You can use strawberries for other dishes than for desserts and preserves.
Mr Fearnley-Whittingstall probably has a website too. [ Try: www.rivercottage.net ] Or go to the public library and look at his recipe-book The River Cottage Cookbook [ISBN:0-00-716409-2] page 122.
But the recipe is so simple. Just slice them and put them on home-baked white bread with either butter or heavy cream with a little sugar and peppar. Experiment!

    Best wishes,
    Anna

  16. A bumper crop of strawberries would be a dream come true. Where have I been that I've never heard of pavlova? Sent me running to Goggle where I immediately put on two pounds just reading the recipes. What a wonderful taste sensation it must be.

  17. Aren't ripe strawberries wonderful! I have tiny wild ones that grow all around my property and larger cultivated ones that I buy from local farmers. I eat them on my breakfast cereal in the morning, and I have also indulged myself with strawberry shortcake recently. Strawberry season is almost over here -- but the raspberries have just begun. Heaven! -Jean
