Garden Blogger's Muse Day - June 2009

Adlestrop

'Yes. I remember Adlestrop—
The name, because one afternoon
Of heat the express-train drew up there
Unwontedly. It was late June.

The steam hissed. Someone cleared his throat.
No one left and no one came
On the bare platform. What I saw
Was Adlestrop—only the name

And willows, willow-herb, and grass,
And meadowsweet, and haycocks dry,
No whit less still and lonely fair
Than the high cloudlets in the sky.

And for that minute a blackbird sang
Close by, and round him, mistier,
Farther and farther, all the birds
Of Oxfordshire and Gloucestershire.'

~ Edward Thomas 1878 -1917

This poem brings back fond memories of childhood summer day trips by steam train. Days when it was still possible to open a train window and just listen to the outer world. My high cloudlets were photographed late yesterday afternoon - the moon is afloat amidst them.

More June musings can be enjoyed at Sweet Home and Garden Chicago hosted by Carolyn Gail.

  1. Thank you for the nostalgia trip. I too remember travelling by steam train, most memorably going from Paddington to Falmouth in the care of the guard. You couldn't do it these days! Val

  2. This is a nice one.

I've never travelled by steam train but can just so easily imagine how nice it would be.

Wispy fairweather cirrus, the weather looks nice.

  3. It is so good to take time to enjoy those little pleasures ones that are a gift from nature.

  4. Steam trains evoke such nostalgia don't they. I like the sound they make. Also reminds me of the loads of Steam Train visits we did when my son was young and into Thomas the Tank Engine on TV.

  5. Lovely poem and a lovely photo to go with it. This poem reminds me of a slower and simpler time that more and more I find myself wishing for.

  6. What an experience it would be to travel the countryside by train with the window open. Looking at your cloud photo made me think that it could have been taken from an open train window.

  7. I've never read this poem before, but I love it! Perhaps the world would be a better place if we all stopped for a moment and breathed in the air of Adlestrop.
Glad to hear you've been enjoying some time with VP and other garden bloggers; it is so much fun to meet someone in person after getting to know them through their blogs.
